Implementing Club: Rotary Clubs of Mongolia
The “Keep Mongolia Green” project, launched on May 1, 2005, initially aimed to reduce the sandstorm movement from the deserts of China and Mongolia to the Korean Peninsula. The project, which began in celebration of Rotary International’s 100th Anniversary, was divided into five separate activities, each spanning three years. The project was completed after eight years of work, with a total investment of $1 million and planting over 10,000 trees across 220 hectares of land.
As the project progressed, a secondary goal emerged: combating desertification in Mongolia. This included initiatives such as planting protective forest strips, nurturing and maintaining the planted trees, and establishing tree nurseries to ensure the project's long-term success.
In a significant follow-up to this work, the Mongolian Government adopted an environmental policy focusing on creating an ecologically sustainable environment that benefits both humans and wildlife. We, Rotarians, really appreciate that our initiative has grown and evolved into this national-level policy, the “Green Wall”, which was launched as a three-phase project spanning from 2005-2015, 2015-2025, and 2025-2035. On 4 October 2021, the President of Mongolia launched the “Billion Trees National Movement”, marking a major national effort to combat climate change and further environmental sustainability.
