UN–ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP:
A GLOBAL FORCE FOR GOOD
The collaboration between the United Nations and Rotary International is rooted in history, driven by shared ideals, and dedicated to global impact.
A Historic Connection
Rotary’s engagement with the UN began at its founding. In 1945, 49 Rotarians from 29 nations helped draft the UN Charter during the San Francisco Conference, bringing Rotary’s commitment to peace, dialogue, and international cooperation into the very DNA of the United Nations.
Working Together for Global Health
One of the most prominent collaborations is the fight to eradicate polio. Rotary is a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), along with WHO, UNICEF, and later the CDC and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Rotary’s volunteers, funding, and advocacy have played a crucial role in reducing polio cases worldwide by over 99.9%.
Peace and Conflict Resolution
Rotary and the UN work in parallel to foster peace through training and community-based conflict prevention. Rotary’s Peace Fellowships, which align with UN peacebuilding goals, equip leaders around the world to mediate, lead dialogue, and implement sustainable peace efforts.
Shared Vision: The Sustainable Development Goals
Rotary’s areas of focus — including clean water, education, maternal and child health, and economic development — directly align with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Across the globe, Rotary clubs are implementing grassroots projects that support these goals, in close coordination with UN agencies.
Celebrating Collaboration: Rotary Day at the United Nations
Each year, Rotary Day at the UN recognizes individuals and initiatives that exemplify Rotary’s humanitarian spirit and alignment with UN values. It’s a celebration of global citizenship and service.
This partnership isn’t just symbolic — it’s strategic and deeply practical. It represents what happens when civil society and multilateral institutions unite for common good.
