Ulaanbaatar Rotary Club: Leading society and serving beyond self for 30 years
Leadership for Social Good: Ulaanbaatar Rotary Club’s 30th Anniversary
As Mongolia’s first Rotary Club, we take pride not only in the Rotary movement in Mongolia but also in bringing significant social changes. For 30 years, our members have united driven by the goal to serve society. Founded in 1995 and officially chartered on May 13th under the Hong Kong Shatin Rotary Club’s sponsorship, we pledged to uphold values of friendship, fairness, service, and leadership to build a brighter future for Mongolia. The club’s first decade focused on projects addressing fundamental social needs, laying a foundation for many decades to come.
Ch. Ganbold, Past District Governor 2002-2003 and President of Ulaanbaatar Rotary Club in 1997-1998, 2010-2011, said: "Service Above Self" is not just a slogan for us but the very soul of our Club. Over 30 years, we have strived to embed this quality in every project and initiative for the greater good.
Pioneer: Setting Social Impact Standards
From the beginning, we identified pressing social needs and relentlessly worked to produce effective solutions. Looking back, our history is rich with projects addressing Mongolia’s biggest social challenges based on Rotary’s core purposes and focus areas.
First Decade – Basic Needs: The first decade was dedicated to projects meeting the most fundamental human needs.
Rotary focus on disease prevention and treatment: We brought major progress in cardiovascular care in Ulaanbaatar, from equipping an 8-bed hospital cardiac ward (1995-1996) to upgrading cardiac surgery center equipment at Hospital #3 with international support, saving many lives and improving health. The club successfully implemented 50+ projects with direct funding over $5 million in this area.
Rotary focus on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene: Recognizing the social challenge of clean water access, we launched projects to provide wells and sanitation facilities in needy districts and sub-districts. Under Rotary’s WASH focus, we successfully executed 20+ projects totaling $530,000.
Rotary focus on Mother and Child Health: From its inception, we have worked to protect maternal and child health, partnering with volunteers to implement around 15 projects, donating $375,000 directly under this Rotary focus.
Second Decade – Awareness and Education: The second decade saw efforts focused on education and conscious development.
Third Decade – Equal Access: Reviewing the third decade, we prioritized equal development opportunities across social strata and projects supporting equity and inclusion.
Under the Regional Development focus, we have implemented many projects over 30 years — from disaster relief for rural areas during natural calamities and dzud, to donating equipment to vocational schools, and supporting vulnerable single mothers’ businesses by providing factory equipment. The club has contributed about $260,000 in total donations for regional development projects.
Leadership History: Ulaanbaatar Rotary Club’s Leadership
Our club’s success is inseparable from the dedication and vision of past presidents, boards, and leaders. Each president contributed uniquely to growth, achievements, and community impact. From founding president G. Boshigt to 30th anniversary president Solongo Zalaa-Uul, dedicated leaders have guided the club following Rotary’s principles. Over 30% of all club presidents have served important leadership roles in Mongolia’s Rotary movement and district leadership.

HIGHLIGHTED PROJECTS
I "HEPATITIS-FREE MONGOLIA" PROJECT SINCE 2017
Introduction: Liver diseases including viral hepatitis and cirrhosis often diagnosed late in Mongolia result in a high rate of liver cancer. The "Hepatitis-Free Mongolia" project since 2017 targets early detection and treatment of viral hepatitis and liver cancer among rural residents.
This project is implemented jointly by Ulaanbaatar Rotary Club, Flagstaff RC, and Flagstaff International Relief Effort NGO.
Project Goal: Early diagnosis of liver diseases, preventing progression and mortality, establishing best practices and expanding project reach.
Budget: 310,000 USD
Outcome 2017-2024: Screened 13,000 people in Sukhbaatar and Dornod provinces for Hepatitis B, C and liver cancer, providing treatment to detected cases.
Conclusion: The project model shows viral hepatitis C can be controlled and eliminated at provincial level, contributing to WHO’s global hepatitis elimination goal by 2030. The model is scalable nationally and internationally.

IV. SANITATION PROJECT
Total Budget: 250,000 USD
Impact: Over 25,000 students and teachers as direct beneficiaries
For over 20 years, Ulaanbaatar Rotary Club has worked through sanitation projects to improve school environments and enhance life quality for students and teachers. Since 2003, efforts focused on providing basic sanitation facilities in remote districts and schools, replacing outdoor wooden toilets with running water handwashing and heated facilities safe for cold winters.
This flagship project upgrades sanitation facilities or builds new ones with heated rooms and running water, reducing infectious diseases and absenteeism, thus improving learning environments. Over 25 schools benefited, directly impacting over 25,000 students and teachers. We take pride in this ongoing flagship project.
